NSF CyberAI Innovation: AI Auditing Education
Building AI auditing competency through adoptable, theory-guided curriculum modules.
Overview
Artificial intelligence increasingly shapes decisions in areas such as health care, finance, education, and national security. This project develops educational materials that help colleges prepare students to audit AI systems for safety, accountability, privacy, and security.
Research approach
The project will create and validate a theory-guided education package for undergraduate and graduate computing programs. The package will include an AI-audit competency framework, six modular curriculum units, hands-on labs using real-world datasets and auditing libraries, and competency-based assessments. Students will practice collecting evidence, assessing risks, implementing mitigations, and communicating audit findings in professional reports.
The team will evaluate student learning, instructor usability, adoption, and sustainability across multiple sites. The project will produce reusable curriculum materials and assessment instruments that can be adopted across courses, instructional formats, and learner populations without requiring a complete curriculum redesign.
