Outreach

As an AI researcher and educator, I work with students, teachers, and the public to make AI research more accessible. My outreach focuses on AI and AI ethics education and on helping people understand how AI systems are developed and used.

Community engagement

• Summer 2024 and 2025: Advised high school students from the South Carolina Governor’s School for Science and Mathematics on research projects involving trustworthy large language models. The program gives students experience with the scientific process and research communication. Learn more about the Summer Program for Research Interns.

• Summer 2023: Served as a postsecondary expert at a training workshop in Columbia, South Carolina, organized by the Southern Regional Education Board and the South Carolina Department of Education. Supported K–12 teachers as they reviewed South Carolina’s AI standards and incorporated AI into their computer science curricula. Teaching materials are available on Google Docs.

• November 15, 2022: Participated in STEM Night at Ravenel Elementary School with Clemson AI researchers. We demonstrated AI technologies and discussed their implications with students and families.

• July 20, 2020: Delivered a talk on AI fairness at the NSF Track 2 CRESH Summer School on AI & Smart Health. The talk addressed ethical considerations in smart-health applications, with an emphasis on fairness and transparency.
