Outreach

As an AI researcher, educator, and enthusiast, I strive to bridge the gap between cutting-edge research and the community. By engaging with students, educators, and the public, I aim to promote AI and AI ethics education, inspire the next generation of AI researchers, and ensure that AI technologies are developed and used in ways that benefit society as a whole.

  • In the summer of 2024, I will be advising high school students from South Carolina Governor's School for Science and Mathematics on research projects focused on trustworthy large language models. This initiative aims to provide young scholars to gain direct experience with the scientific process, thus developing their understanding of the scientific method, the methods of discovery, subject matter expertise, critical thinking skills, data analysis and quantitative skills, creativity, and communication skills. More details are available at Summer Program for Research Interns.
  • During the summer of 2023, I served as a post-secondary expert at a training workshop in Columbia, SC, organized by the Southern Regional Education Board and the South Carolina Department of Education. The training session was designed to support K12 teachers in reviewing SC AI standards and the AI for K12 framework. It aimed to incorporate AI into their computer science curricula, equipping educators with the knowledge and resources needed to teach the next generation of students about AI. The teaching materials are available at Google Docs.
  • On November 15, 2022, Clemson AI researchers, including myself, participated in the STEM Night event at Ravenel Elementary School. We engaged with students and their families, showcasing AI technologies and discussing their implications, aiming to inspire curiosity and understanding in young minds.
  • My collaberators and I delivered a talk on AI fairness at NSF Track 2 CRESH: Summer School on AI & Smart Health on July 20, 2020. This event focused on educating participants about the ethical considerations in AI, particularly in the context of smart health applications, emphasizing the importance of fairness and transparency in AI systems.
